The first born, Reuben, means "See, a son!, He has seen my misery". His symbol, the rising sun, signifies new beginnings. Reuben's gemstone is the blood-red sardius stone which was used as a seal, since wax won't adhere to it. "He has set His seal of ownership on us..." (II Corinthians 1:22) These three evidences all point toward salvation. The second son born to Jacob was Simeon which means, "one who hears".
